Big files handled with aplomb

Just opened a 227 MB json file without even blinking. Well done.

copy/paste stops working in version 1.8

Been using this editor long time, everything works great until version 1.8. The copy/paste stopped working. Please fix the bug.

ysun2016 v1.8 · 9 years ago

It has had a crashing problem for several updates (including the current one) where as soon as you Cmd-F or select Edit>Find from the menu it crashes. This unfortunately renders the app virtually useless for dealing with JSON docs of any size.

TomInRIC v1.9 · 9 years ago

This tool is exactly what a programmer developing with current tools needs. It saves me tons of time trying to fumble with other tools that make accessing web services and reviewing their output way slower than need be. The Request builder is straightforard and lets you setup your headers your way The response viewer is also great because it lets you see the results as text, both raw, or prettied up, and it’ll also put the results into a table viewer for easier drilling down. There’s no way this won’t save you time.

Crashes

Crashes when doing any search of the JSON. Junk.

Kuccjkcixsdfvkv · 12 years ago

I like the feature set of this tool, but unfortunately, with large JSON files this app struggles. Anything over 700k and I get frequent crashes. North of 1MB, the tool becomes unuseable. Another editor I’ve recently purchased seems to work fine with large files.

RealProMan · 12 years ago

I was looking for a json editor to handle editing local json files and this app was exactly what I was looking for. Basically I wanted Xcode’s plist editor but for json. Pros: The interface is less clunky than Xcode, it can handle plists (and convert them to json) and you can easily copy and paste arbitrary parts of your hierarchy. Cons: There doesn’t seem to be any way to save optimized (whitespace removed) json files. It seems to only save “pretty” ones. Also, I (naively) nearly skipped over this app because the icon looks like.. well, like it was made by a software developer, but the rest of the app feels polished and loved. Finally, I’m only editing files locally, so I haven’t tried the network support. Very happy with this app for my needs.

xgerrit · 12 years ago

I have no idea how i would ever get along without this tool. I deal with enourmous JSON strings that are in the half a million to million lines when expanded. Yes, it laggs a little on the biggest stuff, but so does my super powered Mac Book Pro. Absolutely incredible tool!

dspencerr · 12 years ago

Ive found it useful in digesting JSON responses from services and parsing those responses. One feature request: allow the user to assign aliases for the HTTP requests so that they can quickly identify them in the list. As it is now, the distinguishing portion of a request is usually way to the right and that part is truncated in the list of requests. Update: The developer is very responsive to change requests and improvmeents.

jack_cox · 11 years ago

I use it routinely to check some large JSON files I output, and validates well. I’d like to see some more: 1. JSON Editor allows newlines (unescaped) to be valid… i’m pretty sure this is not correct. 2. In big files, the line numbers listed with errors don’t seem to match up with the original source code line numbers. I can live with those, and am, but look forward to further improvements.

When I do a find (<cmd> F), the program crashes before I enter the text. I tried to tell the author it seems a hastle to just send an email. This is my email to the author. please fix. (I am running 10.9.5)

k1ym · 11 years ago

The json tools are handy, and in conjunction with the HTTP client I can do a lot of quick testing on my REST services. Nice tool to have in my collection.

justinjenn · 11 years ago

It’s not overly fancy, but so far, I’ve very happy with this app. I’m mostly happy with how intuitive the interface is. I’ve been able to pick up how to use it as I go along pretty well. For instance, drag and drop, copy and paste, and other basics seem to do what you expect. I’ve found a bug in how array items are numbered after inserting and deleting things (sometimes item numbers repeat), but it appears to be benign. Reopening the file you’re editing fixes the problem. No crashes yet, which seems to be no small feat these days. (I’d much rather have a basic-featured crash-free app over a full-featured, crashes-now-and-then app every time.) If I had a suggestion: I’d love to see the raw JSON and the editor at the same time.

stran93luck · 11 years ago

This app is great for working with JSON data. I have had zero problems with it. The only thing that I would like is for the app to retain my window size. I don’t want to drag it bigger every time I open a new doc or window.

Ecurb71 · 11 years ago

Unfortunately, this does not work at all! Freezes constantly for large files. Extremely slow to use and constantly complain even if the JSON is valid. Waste of money!

Tony Kingston · 10 years ago

Great JSON Editor

Nice to have Raw and Tree views. and HTTP Requests. Does what it needs to.

Rowed2damascus · 10 years ago

Simple - exactly what I wanted

I just wanted a simple JSON editor and this one works great! Even better it has HTTP support, I can see myself using that occasionally.

shartypants · 10 years ago

Love it!

The only thing this is missing (for me) is keyboard shortcuts to expand/collapse all. Other than that, it’s very solid and works great.

Busboy42 · 10 years ago

Very helpful

JSON Editor has been very helpful as I work on various projects. Not only does it validate my JSON, but it also lets me view the json as text or in outline form. The outline lets me collapse big JSON files into more manageable pieces. Working on a project that requires hundreds of JSON files has been made much smoother with this app. Thanks to the dev for the attention to details!

Pumasalad · 7 months ago

More than a JSON Editor

It’s a fantastic JSON Editor, but it also does HTTP requests, which make debugging data from endpoints so much easier!

Very helpful for viewing and editing json files. I use it very frequently

Pioneer9672 · 11 months ago

Smooth, clean, effective.

My work flow involves generating lots of mid-length handcrafted JSON files as well as reading and analyzing some very large ones. This is the best tool I have used. It has all the features I need and none of the clutter.

Great little app. Very useful for navigating and editing json files. Its companion CSV editor is also excellent if you work with a lot of CSV data. It doesn’t mangle your input files like Excel

Useful / Usable Tool

With all the free web sites that can parse JSON, why buy an app? First of all, it's just a little more than the cost of a cup of coffee, so if it helps me even once, it's paid for itself. It's a good, solid app. I haven't seen any crashes, and the features that I need are all there. I bought it based on the good reviews I read here, and I'll give it the same 5 stars... Hard to go wrong with this.

JustAnotherJsonWrangler · 1 year ago

Exactly what I need!

I’ve tested countless visual JSON editors, and I can honestly say this one stands out! The tree layout is exactly what I needed—and with the latest update, it now supports Split View: tree view on one side, text view on the other. The best part? When you highlight an item in the tree, it automatically highlights the corresponding text. That feature alone made my day. Huge thanks to the developer for making JSON editing actually enjoyable!

cmdillon · 1 year ago

Best option for JSON viewing and editing

This is an example of what a fit for purpose app should be. It has all the essential features and zero bloat. It is a critical part of my developer toolbox. Simply excellent and excellently simple.

If you work with Json Files is a must.

This tool has so many useful features that I can’t think of working with json without it. Using the keyboard shortcuts makes my workflow so fluid that I just get things done. Great work.

Very helpful and easy to usel

I have an app the must deal with FHIR questionaries using JSON. This app has made maintenance of those files very nice. Today, I saw that a JSON Quick Look extension had been added to my system. Bravo!

Must-have indeed

As all other apps frrom this developer, this app makes my work and life easier. The developer loves making excellnt software, and it really show.

Performant & convenient

I love being able to throw blobs of text and get a nice GUI for inspecting the contents of my complicated JSON files. This app has become fairly critical to my workflow and I am appreciateive to the developer for making it.

Love this program

I have been using this program for years and it is probbly the simplest yet feature rich JSON editor I have ever used. Everytime there is an update I say "can it get any better?" and it does! I would give it more stars if I could

Simplifies work, improves accuracy

Simple to use, has helpful features and easy to see structure.

SprawlMaven · 2 years ago

Please allow split-pane viewing

App has such promise, but is missing a basic feature... split-pane viewing. I don't want to have to choose between two views, or toggle back and forth between them. Why not let us show them side-by side? Also, it may be helpful/useful to make the colors you're showing in the text view also appear in the tree view. The purely-black-on-white is a bit monotonous when compared to the syntax-highlighting in the other view. Check out OK JSON here on the app store to see an example of a well-done tree (albeit they're apparently a viewer only, not an editor.)

MarqueIV · 2 years ago

It keeps getting better and better!

I use this app almost daily and I Love it! The recent updates have just made a great app better.

Freedlun · 2 years ago

Very nice tool

This app satisfies all of my use cases (editing, sorting objects, beautifying, validating, and sending requests). I'll be using it every day and really appreciate the dev's attention to detail with the UI. I also use Postman, and JSON Editor is a nice complement. One small thing that initially tripped me up was an endpoint that requires an AuthCookie header, but AuthCookie was not offered in the HTTP Header popup's list of choices. After a bit, I realized you can double-click HeaderName (rather than invoke the popup menu, and this allows to edit the name with whatever you want. After this minor revelation, all's good with sending requests. The only other (minor) nit I have is that the HTTP client HTTP Header Fields areas are not resizable. The main window is (thanks!) but it would be nice to be able to see more than 2 rows in these areas.

Love this app!

I work with JSON data at work and I use this app often to inspect JSON payloads.

Wittys · 2 years ago

Love this App

I rely upon this app to test out all my JSON/GeoJSON data structures on a nearly daily basis. The nicley intwegrated toolbar fratures to rapidly switch between the editor views are a great new feature. Keep up the excellent work!

Excellent for editing structured data files

I am working on adding schema structured data markup to some websites at my day job and this app has made dealing with the schema JSON-LD files much easier than even VSCode. Very well designed!

HTTP Request Doesn't Work For Me (Updated)

The editor is pretty nice but the included HTTP Request feature did not initially work for me. No matter what URL I used, it reutrns an "Unable to start the request" error. Reached out to the developer and he helped me troubleshoot the problem and even released a new version with logging capability to track down what was going on. My issue was resolved and now the application works great! Updated to 5-stars.

TheKing78 · 3 years ago

Works great, love the extras!

I got this app because I wanted a JSON editor and didn't want to live in VSCode all day long. The JSON editing on this app is fantastic, but I love the hidden extra I didn't know about until I started using the app. The built in HTTP Client, NICE! I'm in Postman a lot, but having this little added feature handy while I'm messing around with JSON is super helpful. This developer knows what they're doing. 👍👍👍👍👍

iMadden · 3 years ago

Been using for years

I use this app for Xcode JSON updates and it always works flawlessly. The developer is very responsive to user's needs.

PillBox_Hat · 3 years ago

Nice little app with some extra features

This is great for editing and validating JSON files and allows both a text view and tree view. I also really appreciate some of the extra features like the command line integration as well as the built in HTTP client.

Periscope data!

Since Periscope ended today (2021-03-31) I downloaded my data, and it turned out to be in a JSON file over 63 MB in size. This app opened it without issue, and lets me view it in tree/outline format. Thank you so much for this app.

Boodlums · 5 years ago

No side by side tree-text views

This is pretty standard fair, and I doubt I will use this app. Also, there is not tool bar view, so one is always going to the menu bar or remembering key strokes. Those who gave this 5 stars have not, I suspect, looked around much.

drmorgan · 5 years ago

Nice Native App!

Wonderful little native mac app that has just enough to get the job done. If you want a seemless json experience get this app now. P.S. There is a CSV version too!

KyleIshie · 5 years ago

Perfect Tool for JSON Slinging

Can't live without this app. Editing, validating is great, but dragging collapsed nodes to reorder is something a text editor will never match. I'd love to see 2 things: Multiple selection (which sounds like it's coming in v1.5) and the ability to customize the columns a bit more – like reorder them and even hide/show the "Type" column which sometimes gets in the way when browsing large data sets. Also, maybe some colorizing? Thanks for a great app!

robbychess · 6 years ago

Disappointed

It is either buggy or a really bad user interface. I have spent an hour trying to figure out how to change ItemN keys to what I want them. If I switch back and form between the tree view and text view keys disappear. The user interface is not intuitive and there is no supporting documentation.

Bill.11743 · 6 years ago

Buggy

Can't figure out why objects are handled as array entries ... Works fine for validation and viewing. Easier to just edit the file in an editor. When I edit the file in a text editor, add objects, etc. and reopen, then the syntax checks out OK. But objects, etc. added, I can't rename.

_NM_ · 6 years ago

The Missing Link

I have been writing the backend of a REST server. This app is exactly what I was looking for to test my code. You can create a whole list of HTTP Rest calls (POST). This app has made my life so much easier. You can create custom POST calls as well as easily edit JSON for those calls. Two thumbs up.

Dave Naz · 6 years ago

Has issues with large files

This worked great for my smaller files, but I purchased it to find an issue with a file that was 10 mb and I kept getting the rainbow wheel until it was unresponsive.

Dig4356 · 7 years ago

Great utility!

Parses large json quickly, includes syntax highlighting and validation with animated error indicating! My only request would be for a splitscreen view. Currently you can view either the raw JSON or the visal tree, not both! 5 stars regardless.

cgban · 7 years ago

Exactly what I needed!

I love this editor. Perfect compliment for any developer constantly working with JSON files.

Chainlinx · 7 years ago

This was the app I was looking for!

This was just the app I was looking for to edit and validate JSON data. I looked at a lot of apps, but this one really fit the bill. It’s easy to view and edit JSON. The app quickly converts JSON between “Tree” editor and “Text” editor mode. This makes it easy to paste JSON data in text mode and then convert to tree mode for validation and viewing. The app also has a great HTTP client which is useful for interacting with REST API in the Cloud. I’d used a couple of other HTTP clients, but this app - once again - really met my needs. And, I especially like the “Beautify” button on the HTTP Response dialog of the client. That really makes it easy to quickly view the data coming from the cloud. Finally, the author does a fantastic job with support. Quickly answering questions and adding new features. Highly rated app and author!

FIXED: “Input depth exceeds max depth of 32”???

UPDATE: Without the 32-deep limit, this is a great and fast viewer for JSON files. I was able to open a 100MB NewRelic stack trace JSON file in less than ten seconds, and navigate through the tree. Great work! Also it seems like preserving original formatting improved with this version as well. Previously when I had hand-coded JSON with semi-compact formatting, a round-trip through JSON Editor would move a bunch of braces to the next lines; now those are preserved. Overall: Very useful tool for both small and huge JSON files, responsive developer, and fills its niche well. Can’t find a fault in that! Suggestion: In the “duplicate” function, can custom formatting be preserved there? For instance, with this JSON (using ‘-‘ in place of spaces just in this review to keep formatting visible): { ----"main": { --------"foo”:-------{"value": 6}, --------"bar":-------{"value": 3} ----} } … if I dupllicate “bar” (right-click, select ‘duplicate’) then save, I get: { ----"main": { --------"foo":-------{"value": 6}, --------"bar":-------{"value": 3}, ----"bar - 2": { ------"value": 3 ----} --} } … that is, “bar - 2” loses the special formatting of “bar”, and the ‘}’ after it loses the indent it had had previously (adopts 2-space-per-level rather than the 4-space-per-level the input file had) Still, just a nit, and this update really made the application super-useful to me. Kudos and thanks! ORIGINAL: Not sure what the error “Input depth exceeds max depth of 32” might mean, other than that “32” seems like an arbitrarily low limit for something. Are you using an Int bitmask for something? Hopefully not object nesting depth (since that would seem very silly). I’m assuming it is because my file is too large or complex, but I can’t find any documentation on the tool or its limitations. In any case, it won’t let me view it in the tree and essentially leaves me in a plain text editor. I already have a lot of plain text editors, and this doesn’t seem to add any value there.

Exactly what I was looking for: an efficient JSON browser

I need to grapple with JSON files: review them, check them against a spec, design them, document the designs, etc, etc. This app is perfect for me, allowing me to quickly see how a new JSON is laid out, searching for things, digging deep when I need to. I’m very glad I spent $5 on it, I’ll be using it every day now. I strongly recommend this app if you do any work with JSON objects and files; it is quick, clean, efficient, powerful.

dmac-ct · 7 years ago

Outstanding little app

I love this little app, for the price it’s perfect. It loads in JSON files quickly, allows me to traverse the leaves of it, select keys. Really everything I need. Well worth the money if you open JSON files. Also found a great feature that allows me to copy out from json various formats, including Swift code, and bracketted JSON paths, which is very useful for developing iOS apps with SwiftyJSON. Thanks again!

CanadianMacGuy · 8 years ago

Great Tool, with recent changes 5 stars

This is the best JSON editor I’ve found for macOS. Recent improvements have moved my rating to ***** 5 Stars *****. It now allows line-breaks in values and shows multiple lines. It now supports setting size of window and size of individual columns — a huge time saver when opening a file. I can go straight to work, rather than adjusting the window. Also the UI for specifying these settings (by number or using an example window) is very handy and does the job well. Thanks for a great product — and the ongoing improvements!

gratidudee · 8 years ago

Excellent app

I’m an iOS developer and that means I spend a lot of time trying to make sense of JSON responses from RESTful web servers. This app is an indespensable tool as it does a fantastic job of: 1 - Saving common requests I need to make, it’s just a click to switch between endpoints! 2 - Formats the JSON in an easily digestible format. This especially plays well with the new Codable/Decodable technology in Swift 4, which oftentimes reports an error such as “you have a problem at index 46 of the array”. Using JSON Editor’s JSON Document feature, I can quickly click through a UI (reminsicent of a plist editor) to see what the problem is. Also the developer is super helpful and responsive to support requests. I can’t praise this app enough!

bpapa · 8 years ago

Great With Large Files

I had a very large json file (almost 9 million lines) and was having a lot of trouble visualizing the structure. It loaded it up in less than 20 seconds and made visualization feasible.

Pwnrar · 8 years ago

One nice addition would be

Like your program, thanks! A nice addition would be detecting changes to the JSON file and show those changes (update your display) as changes happen. It would speed developer’s real-time monitoring.

LessMSios · 8 years ago

Pretty good!

I’m using this app currently to build and edit several rather large (several hundred line) JSON files for a development project. Overall it’s pretty good. It helps visualize the structure of the file really well, and editing is very simple. My only request is multiple selections. In my use case, I find my self changing structures sometimes which means moving rows to different areas of the structure while maintaining their order. Because I often have to move around many rows at once, I have to do them one by one, as I cannot shift+select multiple items at once. Adding that functionality would probably shave a solid hour off my work.

Handy JSON editor

This has been a very useful tool. Well worth the money! I have a few requests to the developer: - allow for a configurable number of spaces for the “Readable JSON”. You use 2 spaces, but some people prefer 4 or 5 - use different colors for strings versus labels. Currently, something like “existing_files”: “replace” would all be in red. Other editors have these in two different colors which makes it more readable. - if the user tries to close a file without saving, please WARN them.

Diver_Dave · 8 years ago

Great JSON Editor

What a great JSON editor: * Fast validation * Pretty Formatting * Great Error detection (providing precise location) * Simple shortcut keys to jump between raw, tree views, and formatting What needs improved: * Importing large JSON. It hangs on a 2.7MB JSON blob I’m trying to paste in. * Remove the occassional reminder to rate it. That’s cheesy. This app is worth it though. Great job!

Would be nice if it didn’t crash when using Find
